Conference on building the brandname for the shrimp of Vietnam
Update 12/3/2008

In the morning of 27th November 2008, the conference on building the national brandname for shrimp products of Vietnam was organized in Ho Chi Minh City by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and POSMA.

The aim was to discuss the establishment of the brandname program, certifying agricultural and fisheries products following the quality standards in farming and processing such as HACCP, BAP, CoC, GlobalGAP, GAP; and selecting a logo to symbolize the image for ecologic shrimp of Vietnam. The places which can be chosen to build the ecologic shrimp brandname are Nam Can and Ca Mau with the intensive farming area of over 200 ha.

Until October 2008, the seafood export turnover of the whole country reached 4 billion USD. The seafood consumption in some countries has decreased recently due to the influences of the world economic crisis upon producing and trading activities of the seafood export enterprises. Yet, there are also new markets in South America, Arab, and Middle East welcoming our seafood. Building the national shrimp trademark would prospectively take part in preserving and expanding the consumption market for the shrimp products.

Ms. Tran Thi Mieng – Deputy Bureau Chief of Bureau of Commercial Processing – Agricultural, Forest, and Fisheries Products – Salt Sector said that expenses to build the national brand name for the shrimp of Vietnam are not yet estimated, but to build the brand name for the salmon of Norway, this country has had to spend 3 million USD per year on that. The shrimp of Vietnam is exported mainly from the enterprises to the importers, not directly to the consumers. Therefore, Vietnam does not need to build the trademark for the shrimp, but only need to build the brand name so that the shrimp importers realize and will build a particular brand name for the shrimp of Vietnam in the import market. “With this way, expenses to build the national brand name for the shrimp of Vietnam would be cheaper” defined Ms. Mieng.
